I wanted to show a persons life zooming by from birth to death including all major life events in a 3 minute film (max) using this technique to show them. However it's reached the point where I have accepted I don't really have the resources to make that happen, and I definatly can't afford the props I would need, so I have altered my idea slightly, here it is:

Keeping the 3 minutes (max) length of the film I'm going to set my film over the period of a day, so that works out as I have to squeeze 8 hours in every minute, which I like because it means the film should have a fast pace, helping get across the Fast Living aspect. It will start at waking up, end going to bed, obviosly I'll have to include regular activites to keep the films structure (likely to be meals) but in between them there's going to be activites that help to define me, so things that I would do in a day that other might not.

Kismetik Popularity

Saw this today when I was checking up on the band on myspace, but turns out they've made it into a magazine, and so has the front cover I designed! It’s constantly building and will always be so that I can get to a higher level of creativity.

It has been for myself, but also for my peers and educators. Myself because I need to be able to be creative to a minimum level, which I feel I am, but I need to understand what needs to be done to be at that level in terms of technique and method. My peers because they can look at what I have created and give me feedback and suggestions. My educators because they have made the decisions to let me progress as far as I already have, and there will always be someone to decide whether my creativity is at a good enough level, after educators there will be businesses and people from the real world.

When I have created work in the past I put it through stages of selection, which involve all of the groups that I say my creativity has been for. First of all I select various versions of a final piece, all of which are in the later stages of design. Then I pass them onto peers and educators for feedback, obviously I get a variety because of the difference between peers and educators so I have to determine which of the feedback I’m likely to incorporate into the final version. It’s likely that I use feedback in most of my final versions, but I will not use it to an extent that it would effectively change a design, so I would say that when creating my work the decisions I make are my own, but in some circumstances they are influenced by groups, but they have to be - if a product were created without first prototyping it, its likely to have flaws which the audience do not want.

What do I want the future of my creativity to be? I suppose I want it to be something that’s very broad and constantly growing, and of course I want it to have the involvement of various groups because this helps to broaden ideas and technique.

Research can help me get to the point I want to be at because I feel it is the basis of any idea, and therefore of my own creativity. For example, before I starting drawing sketches for my logo’s, I first looked at existing ones, but specifically I looked at tribal designs, I.e. tattoo’s because I knew that one of my designs was going to have a tribal theme to it.

When first starting research I like to use the exploratory method because it’s the best way to look at a lot of information and compile it without actually knowing specifically what to look at. However, it’s not my favourite, I find Interim to be the most useful. Once I know what I’m specifically looking for I use a web-based application called StumbleUpon. It’s an application which allows it’s users to ‘stumble upon’ new things which they have specified a category for and save the pages to come back to after gathering enough - I.e. if you select a category such as Arts, then there are subcategories such as drawings, which I have used to look at character sketches to try and initiate ideas for my avatar.

I do not really feel very weary of any of the methods, nor do I find any of them irrelevant, I feel they all play their part, there’s a point in a project in which each of the research methods could be used.

Logo Development 01

First Logo - This is a developed stage of the original tribal logo, in fact the original did look more like this than the one which formed an eye in my previous post, the main changes that I have made are to the shape, it's less jagged but still has tribal influences. Overall though, I would say it looks more like a logo than the previous one, and better represents me because it still shows animal instinct and the other aspects, but its because its been smoothed it looks more controlled.

Second Logo - Slight alterations to this from the previous version, the shooting lines have been moved closer together so they intertwine to show that I have various paths; all of which are progressing. To confirm this meaning I have placed the 'i' at the top of the image as to represent where I want to be. I have tried to incorporate the tribal feel from the otter logo as well by changing the font, I recreated the 'i' using Photoshop to give it a more jagged look, and a direct link to the previous tribal logo.

I don't think I'll be able to create a logo that represents everything that I am without it being overly complicated, and after talking to peers I've been advised not to create something that is overly complicated. However, this isn't a problem, I'm in the process of creating various final versions of different logo's, each of which exaggerate a specific set of qualities that represent how I make creative decisions, i.e. animal instinct; I choose designs that feel right, ones I think will stand the test of time.

Logo Development 00

Here's three basic logo concepts. The first incorperates my name, and so has a corporate feel to it, as in it's a serious logo for a serious thing. I'm not saying that I'm not serious, but I feel I'm more laid back than this logo suggests, but then again it's only the first version so it's appearance may change. The imagery consists of thinning spiked triangles heardling towards one point, hopefully this displays that everything I'm doing is building to a specific point. Inside of these froms an 'i' aswell. With all of the logo's I have focoused on the first letter of my name, 'i', because it is the first letter of my written identity and so I feel it's easy to manipulate.

The second logo represents 'i' in two ways, the first way isn't so obvious but the logo originates from my signature (how I write the 'i') but that's been hidden because I have doubled up the image to make it look like it's forming an eye. I've designed in towards a tribal theme, this is because I thought the most obvious way to show physicality, sport interest and animal instsinct was through a tribal based image. However I can't help but notice that the logo bears similarities to the 'No Fear' logo, so it will probably change, I may revert to something simpler or try something more complicated.

The third logo has lines shooting upwards and outwards, this hopefully gives the representation that I am someone who is progressing and broadening their knowledge. Again there is the 'i' planted in the middle of the logo, but still early stages - the image or at least font is likely to change.

How Logo's Change

I feel bad, it's been over a week since I've even looked at my online journal, so I thought I'd transfer some of my written work onto here, here's the first slice:

About a week ago I started looking at logo development of existing companies, the example I'm going to be using can be found on this site http://www.neatorama.com/2008/12/03/the-story-behind-hollywood-studio-logos/.

I don't think its enough to see how one version of a final logo looks because whenever I produce a logo there's various final versions, so I have looked at how the Warner Bros. logo has changed over the years. It has had 11 looks, the original was the 'Brain Shield' Which lasted from 1923-29. The one we know today is the 'CGI Shield', which came about in 1998.

Apart from the odd logo, there has been a dominant look and style to the majority of them, there's been a slight differ in shape, size, typeface etc. but generally they all look fairly similar.

Avatar Mood Board: 01

SPP: Metropolis

Fisrt things first.. what a bloody long film! Righto, few things to talk about with this one.

The films tagline: 'There can be no understanding between the hands and the brain unless the heart acts as a mediator.' - this message was reapeated throughout the film at different points, and until close to the end of the film it didn't make perfect sense. I liked this because it kept me guessing, and when I did realise what it ment I was chuffed. The Hand, Brain and Mediator were represented through different characters, and different social classes. The hands were clearly the working class, the brain was Joh Fredersen who was the creator of metrolpoils and clearly of a higher stature than the rest of the characters, and the heart was Freder, the son of Joh Fredersen, his role clearly being to connect the two groups.

Aparantly the film shows technology in a rather tainted light, almost showing it as evil. I would agree to some extent as there is an evil robot, and the fact that Metropolis is run by machinary and technology means that the 'Hands' are constantly forced to work to support it, they're almost slaves. However, there are flaws with naming the technology as evil I feel - the technology itself isn't, it's the way that the characters use it, i.e. the evil robot doesn't have it's own will, it does that of Rotwang (the inventor). The 'Hands' may feel forced to keep the machinary running, but they are dependant on it and they need it as much as it needs them. This is more clearly shown after the workers destroy the machines.

Well that's it for now, if anyone didn't get the names of the films that Julius suggested they are:

Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)
Testuo II: Bodyhammer (1991)

Both films are by Shinya Tsukamoto

SPP: The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

We watched 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari' (1919) in last tuesday's lecture, it was an interesting film, and although at the start of it I wasn't entirely sure of its relevence to Multimedia, as it progressed certain aspects became apparant.

It seems to have been a heavy influence on the likes of Tim Burton, in the lecture it was linked to 'Sleepy Hollow', but a last night I watched 'Sweeney Todd', and there were clear links between the two. For example, the main characters wear heavy make-up, which I would see as a visual decleration of emotion and mood. There are other ways in which both films accomplish setting mood - they both show certain scenes in different tints of colour, i.e. Sweeney Todd has scenes set in the past where the screen is much brighter and colourful than compared to the consistent grey and dim colour throughout the rest of the film. Dr Caligary has scenes where the screen is tinted a certain colour or tone to help establish mood - i.e. some of the flashbacks were in a sepia tone rather than the standard black and white used throughout the film.

Of course, there were links to other Tim Burton films, the likes of 'Corpse Bride' could be related because of the abstract theme, in The Cabinet of Dr Caligari many objects such as roofs form pathways, which clearly happens in Corpse Bride also.

There were some other techniques that I noted down; the film is shot from a first person narrative which for it's time would have been something else. It was the first film ever to start with a flashback, it seems to have been quite the trend setter as it used a lot of brand new techniques for its time. It is a German expressionism film - because of the mise-en-scene; so the sets and decor, also the light, shadows and patterns of object are all painted onto the sets. There were a few more techniques that were noticable, such as authority figures being seated higher than the general public, which i felt was an effective way of showing stature. The frame was controlled very well, it was clear where the audeince should have been looking at all times, which was important as the shots didn't move, they had to be framed perfectly.

Identities: 01

Well seeing as Second Life still doesn't want to work for me I've taken some time to look at some 3D avatars on YouTube. The most appealing ones are those with exaggerated features, when comparing them to the likes of my avatar on Second Life it's a lot easier to understand what they represent. The avatars on Second Life all have the same basic skeleton so its harder to create an identity, in terms of exaggerating features at least, than it will be when creating mine using 3D Studio Max.

Originally I was going to create an identity by creating an avatar which showed an alter ego, with hope that if it showed my opposite people may understand that. However, at this stage I'm unsure of this idea's potential success, and although I'm not ruling it out completely I am resorting to the technique of exaggerating personality features to the extent that they can be showed physically.

Here's some of the avatars that I have looked at:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DXGhw-z9hQE

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EklzamltEgM

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jWW_tPqq9Fw

3D - First Attempt

Second Life Trouble

Hey all, just got back into nottingham, by which I mean the other night, sorry for the lack of Second Life entries but my laptops charger has been up here since the holidays and so havn't been able to play it. I'm completely new to this software, although I have played on MMOPG's before whilst at school, but this is different. There are many more freedoms that the user has, i.e. complete customisation of the avatar, and the ability to create objects in a variety of different shapes and forms.
So far most of what I have done has been experimentation in order to become more familiar with the software and how it functions, this has ranged from exploring the various areas of second life, talking with other users and seeing what’s available for download and customisation of the avatars and their environment.
Initially I tried to make my character look like me, but it was harder than it seemed so I resorted to making just a standard looking male. However, I do have some ideas of what I want the avatar to look like after some more time in Second Life, I want it to show an alter-ego in a physical form, so something I’m not but am capable of becoming, reason being that I think this has more to do with self exploration than making a normal looking version of myself.

Interactive Flash - Finished

England WCF - Flash Project color: rgb(255, 255, 0);">I've come to a final decision that my flash production's theme will be a football match - might be a bit boyish, but hey, it's mainly guys on this course anyway.

The Story - It's 2v2 in extra time, England vs. Germany World Cup Final (so cliché), Germany have just scored and are pressing hard, we're into the last 5 minutes and it's all up to you (the user).

It's going to start with an England kick-off; the user plays the role of an attacker - the players wont have names in order to give the project a timeless feel. The user can make various choices over the last 5 minutes, each resulting in one of four final outcomes; one - sent off (resulting in losing the game); two - conceding (resulting in losing the game); three - assisting in a goal (resulting in winning the game); four - scoring (resulting in winning the game).

I hope to add in a feature at the end of the animation, basically match stats, showing your players overall rating (out of 10) - this score not only depends on the final outcome, but choices made during the game, i.e. choosing to run with the ball and losing it would result in a lower score, but choosing to pass would result in a higher score. This feature is to make every choice count, making the project repayable various times before getting the same final outcome, making it more interesting for longer.

Audio - I'm completely new to Adobe Flash, so I'm not sure what I’ll be capable of, however I have ideas in mind in terms of audio. Clicking buttons will result in a sound of a ball being kicked, depending on choices the user makes it may be different, i.e. if you choose to foul someone a whistle may be blown or the crowd may shriek or boo. I think ambience is also important, so there may faint crowd noises between choices.

Anyway that's what I intend to create, hopefully I can, hopefully I can do more, we'll see.

The Meeting - One Shot Short

Finally! I officially hate YouTube, I've been trying to upload this thing for days now, but here it is anyway, hope you like it:

The Edit - When we filmed this the group all shared a kind of hidden camera idea in their minds, it was basically the reason we came to film what we did. Previous attempts of filming involved putting a camera in a car and using it as a 'Cop Cam' - as in the style of American Police car chases. We didn't use this because although we weren’t physically moving the camera, we were moving a car, so were unsure if that would violate the brief.

In our chosen footage I didn't feel the camera placement was convincingly imitating a hidden camera as nothing obscures its visual scope or movement. So during my edit I have not tried to imply that the film is shot from a hidden camera point of view. I have decreased the saturation and increased the contrast as well as adding an effect to make the lens seem slightly dirty - these all share the same goal; to give the film a more serious meaning. I have added slow motion, but only where the main action unfolds, this is to exaggerate what happens and indicate its importance. I have also added subtitles - for two reasons, one; the audio isn't perfectly clear, however I did want to use it, but couldn't increase the verbal audio without the noise of the car also being increased. Two; it shows the character roles, i.e. the car driver has standard white subtitles, whereas the two men asking for directions have theirs shown in red, and one in italics, suggesting he doesn't mean what he's saying. The subtitles only occur until the film is slowed down, after that they cease, this is deliberate and attempts to show where the story is building, and where it's ending.

I feel that the plot is carried out well, and that there is a clear start, middle and ending. The start suggests what the film is about as it shows a police warning for car theft, then straight away a car pulls up and seconds later two seemingly innocent men appear to ask for directions. The Middle is where the action occurs, the film slows down and suddenly one of the men attempts a car theft, but fails. The ending compliments the start, as if to say 'I told you so' - the men disperse and the man drives off, then the camera pans back to the warning sign.

A full 360 degree pan takes place, but its justified as it follows the action throughout and opens and closes the film with an intended meaning, they aren't so obvious as they are broken up into multiple pans. Various zooms are also implemented, again with the same function as the pans, but camera movement also keeps the audience more entertained, so hopefully this is quite an enjoyable, at least not boring, video to watch.

Pixilation Project

Sorry its so late to be uploaded, Youtube's only just started to like my video, anyway.. hope you enjoy, this is my finished Pixilation Project, I might still add in some sound effects though.

Quick overview - my video is called 'Power', which is also the theme, the basic storyline is that the person is just a normal guy, but he suddenly has this vast amount of power and by the end of the video he becomes corrupt - he starts his day using his power to carry out normal activities, by the end of it he's simply doing what he likes.

The Rule of Thirds

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; There isn't a dominant colour, or colour variation so its difficult to determine the meaning of them. However, taking into account the title (Love More) I would expect red to show some dominance, but I would assume its deliberate that it doesn't, I think the artist is trying to show that love isn't as simple as one emotion or feeling, but a combination of many or even that you can't have love without other emotions, and as the colours contrast it suggests that maybe love is made up of contrasting feelings, such as both love and hate.
The colours show more warmth in the centre, and this is where the audience's eyes are initially drawn to, warm colours convey excitement, so the first perception of the image is enticing. As you look at the image for longer the cooler colours become more prominent, and so the image loses its opening interest.
Overall the image uses the colour spectrum well, and at first glance the image looks like its bursting out at the audience, which is exagerated by the use of colour - changing the hue and saturation as the colours are closer to the edge of the image.

I came across the problem of not being allowed to take pictures of the artists work, just in case anyone else had the same problem here's a bunch of links with most of the exhibition artwork on them:

Rebecca Partridge Richard Kenton Webb Duncan Bullen

Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on Jane Bustin, if you find anything I'd appreciate it if you let me know, thanks.

Understanding Design Methodologies

Why is it that we want our belongings to do more for us than to function well?

I own a variety of guitars, some simply for the aesthetic value, others for the way they sound, however I feel that this guitar carries both qualities of sounding good and being eye catching. I don't think its enough anymore for our possessions to function well, we always want more from the things we own, and this is partly down to our consumerist life styles and social pressures. For example, new mobile phones are constantly being made and sold, not because their predecessors no longer function well, but because its not enough to function well, visual design is as important as how well an object works now - and I know this is true as I wouldn't have purchased my guitar if it didn't look exactly like it did.

Why are we willing, as soon as we can afford it, to pay extra for things with appealing forms?

Consumerism. We want things that look nice, which don't necessarily function well, i.e. I could have bought a better functioning guitar than the one above for the same price, but it wouldn't have had such an attractive design - and truth be told if I had looked elsewhere I could have bought it for cheaper, I saw it, loved it, then bought it - without looking around first. Buying on impulse happens a lot, which is why so many things have attractive designs over function.

Reading and Reflection: The New iPhone

Reading and Reflection: The New iPhone

(491 words)

In 2007 Apple’s iPhone debuted, and it was revolutionary in the world of mobile phones. It carried the same concept as so many phones before it, which was to integrate various multimedia features into one gadget, as well as keeping it as a phone, and it did just that but in a way we‘d never seen before.
The original iPhone had a 2 mega pixel camera, a built in iPod and either an 8GB or 16GB memory capacity, depending on how far you wanted to stretch your wallet, plus all the features you find on a standard phone, calculator, alarm, games etc. However, none of these features really stood out, the only thing that did was its touch-screen capabilities, and the popular ‘YouTube’ feature - but since then the likes of the ‘Tocco’ from Samsung have been developed, which could do whatever an iPhone could do, other competitors have also introduced phones with similar capabilities, such as LG’s U990.
So now we have the new second generation iPhone, but its unlikely that it will have the same impact as the original. It doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking, touch screen has been done, and the other features remain practically unchanged. The main new features consist of a full internet browser, which means no more mobile internet, the interface is the same as you would see on a Mac, and its fast too as it has 3G connectivity, although these features are new to the iPhone, they‘re not new to the Mobile world, other phones offer the same technology. However the iPhone has been able to brag for sometime that it has a Mac based OS X operating system, and until recently very few phones compared to that, the Nokia N95 was first to with its Windows Mobile operating system, but on its way now is the ‘Omnia’ by Samsung. It has an improved version of Windows Mobile, its touch screen, and its specifications and features match that of the new iPhone, if not beating it in some areas, for example, it has a 5 mega pixel camera. Omnia also has a full internet browser and 3G, like the iPhone.
But despite the competition and the lack of new features the iPhone is still likely to prevail above competitors because its appealing to consumers, it looks nice, it’s a status symbol and it’s the gadget to have at the moment. Of course because they are so sought after they’re more likely to be a target for thieves, much as iPods were a few years ago when they were the gadget to have.
So is it worth the money? It’s a guarantee that in around 6 months time the iPhone’s specifications wont be worth what’s paid for them now, and apart from the fact it now has faster unrestricted internet, its virtually the same as the first generation iPhone, so the impact on society is likely to be small.

Pixilation

had my first go at it yesterday with Adam, Joe and Sean. we didn't really have time to come up with a plot so make what you will of it when you see it, its completely improvised, so don't be put off by the mix of bad martial arts and Fresh Prince style dancing..

..
